The transition into the final year of Sixth Form can feel both exciting and overwhelming. For many Year 13 students, the pressure of exams, the uncertainty of the next step and the expectation to take greater ownership of their learning can all build quickly. At The Life Skills Company we understand that this stage of education is a defining one. Students are on the edge of their futures and the right guidance can help them approach it with confidence. That is why our student leadership workshops for Sixth Forms across Surrey are designed to give young people practical skills that make a real difference to their performance and wellbeing.
Our Maximising Success in the Sixth Form workshop was created in response to a very real need. After the disruption of the Covid pandemic, many Year 13 students faced the prospect of public exams without the steady build-up of earlier exam experience. Schools asked us to develop a workshop that would meet this gap and support students who needed reassurance, structure and effective strategies. The result is a focused and energetic 1.5 hour session that helps students understand how to learn with purpose and how to manage themselves during the most demanding moments of Sixth Form life.
Helping Students Take Control of Their Revision
One of the biggest challenges for Year 13 students is knowing how to revise in a way that is both productive and enjoyable. Revision can become a source of stress when students do not know where to begin or when they rely on methods that do not suit their learning style. Our workshop introduces students to a range of effective revision approaches so they can build a toolkit that actually works for them.
We guide students through simple but powerful techniques that encourage active learning. They explore how to break topics down, how to use different memory strategies and how to create a revision plan that is realistic rather than overwhelming. By letting them practise during the session, they get to experience the difference that good revision habits can make. Many students leave feeling more in control and more motivated to start preparing for exams with purpose.
Making Summarising a Superpower
A key part of successful revision is the ability to condense large amounts of information into manageable pieces. This is a skill that students will use far beyond Sixth Form, yet many find it difficult to know what to include, what to remove or how to structure their notes. Our workshop gives students a clear method for summarising text so they can revise without drowning in pages of information.
Through practical activities, students learn how to pull out key messages, spot patterns and reframe information in a way that supports memory. This makes the revision process less intimidating and helps them feel more prepared when facing subjects that seem information heavy. When students discover that they do not need to rewrite entire chapters to revise effectively, it instantly boosts their confidence and reduces unnecessary workload.
Building Better Time Management Skills
Balancing coursework, revision, part time work and personal life can quickly leave students feeling stretched. Time management becomes even more crucial during Year 13 and our workshop helps students develop a structure that supports a healthy balance.
We take them through a simple approach that helps them prioritise tasks and plan ahead for the exam season. They learn how to organise their schedule so that revision becomes achievable rather than a last-minute scramble. Many students appreciate the chance to reflect on how they currently use their time and how small changes can make a big impact on their performance and wellbeing. Sixth Form teams often tell us that this part of the workshop leads to positive habits across the whole year group.
Interactive, Energetic and Built for Sixth Form Learners
One of the things that makes our workshops popular with schools is the interactive style. We believe students learn best when they are actively involved rather than listening passively. Throughout the 1.5 hour session, students take part in activities that reinforce the techniques being taught. This helps them understand the strategies at a deeper level and makes it more likely that they will continue using them across their subjects.
Teachers often comment on how engaged the year group is during the workshop. Students enjoy the mix of practical learning, reflection and shared discussion. There is a strong sense of participation and everyone leaves with something useful that they can apply straight away. It is important to us that students feel encouraged, supported and capable of achieving their best.
