The Importance of Teaching Sixth Form Study Skills

Updated: Apr 19

As educators guiding students through the critical years of sixth form, we understand the multifaceted challenges they face—academic rigour, increasing independence, and preparation for higher education or the workforce. Amidst these challenges, one aspect stands out as fundamental to their success: study skills. Today, we'll explore the benefits and importance of integrating study skills into sixth form education.

Academic Achievement- Teaching study skills equips students with the tools they need to excel academically. By imparting techniques such as time management, effective note-taking, and active learning strategies, we empower students to optimise their learning process. This leads to improved comprehension, retention, and application of knowledge, ultimately enhancing their performance in exams, coursework, and beyond.

Preparation for Higher Education- Sixth form serves as a crucial bridge to higher education or the workforce. By instilling strong study skills, we prepare students for the rigours of college or university. These skills—critical thinking, research proficiency, and independent study—are essential for success in tertiary education, where students must navigate complex subjects and self-directed learning environments.

Reducing Stress and Overwhelm- Effective study skills help alleviate stress and overwhelm among students. By teaching strategies for time management, task prioritisation, and workload organisation, we enable students to approach their studies in a structured and manageable manner. This reduces anxiety during exam periods and promotes a healthier, more balanced approach to learning.

Lifelong Learning- Beyond academic success, teaching study skills fosters a culture of lifelong learning. By helping students develop effective study habits, we empower them to become self-directed learners who actively seek knowledge and continually refine their skills. This prepares them for the demands of an ever-evolving global landscape, where adaptability and continuous learning are key to success.

Boosting Confidence and Resilience- Mastering study skills not only enhances academic performance but also boosts students' confidence and resilience. As they see their efforts translate into tangible progress and achievements, they gain a sense of efficacy over their learning journey. This confidence extends beyond the classroom, empowering students to tackle challenges with resilience and determination.

Preparation for the Future Workforce- The study skills students acquire in sixth form are highly transferable to the workforce. Employers value individuals who can manage their time effectively, communicate clearly, and problem-solve independently—all skills honed through diligent study. By teaching study skills, we prepare students not just for academic success but also for future career readiness.

So, as we can see, integrating study skills into sixth form education is paramount to fostering academic excellence, personal growth, and future success. As educators, we have the opportunity to empower students with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive and dynamic world. Let us embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly and guide our students toward a future filled with promise and possibility.

At The Life Skills Company, we understand the importance of equipping sixth formers with the essential skills they need to excel academically and beyond

That's why we're excited to introduce our Sixth Form Independent Learning Conference, designed to empower students with key independent learning skills.

Independent Learning Conference Part 1:

In the first part of our conference, students will dive into two critical independent learning skills:

Speed Reading- Our speed-reading workshop is aimed at helping students absorb information faster while maintaining comprehension. By mastering speed reading techniques, students can efficiently navigate through vast amounts of material, enabling them to read around their subjects and deepen their understanding.

Effective Note Taking- Taking effective notes is a cornerstone of successful learning. Our workshop focuses on equipping students with strategies to capture key information from speeches and lectures accurately. With excellent note-taking skills, students can enhance their learning experience, improve their retention of information, and ultimately achieve better grades.

Independent Learning Conference Part 2:

In the second part of our conference, students will further enhance their independent learning toolkit with two additional skills:

Condensing/Summarising- Learning how to condense and summarise information is essential for effective revision, referencing, and avoiding plagiarism. Our workshop guides students in distilling complex ideas and texts into concise summaries, enabling them to study more efficiently and prepare for exams with confidence.

Time Management- Time management is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance, avoiding procrastination, and staying focused on academic goals. Our workshop provides practical strategies for students to optimise their use of time, minimise last-minute rushes, and prioritise tasks effectively, empowering them to achieve academic success while maintaining overall well-being.

Our conferences are tailored to suit the needs of whole year groups, typically running for approximately one hour each. We understand the importance of flexibility, so we can accommodate your school timetable and preferences. Whether you choose to schedule each part separately or run them back-to-back as a comprehensive two-hour conference, we'll work closely with you to ensure a well-organised and successful event for all involved.
